I’ve been wondering what people can do on these two exercise “structures”, for lack of a better word. And even more why would you want to do anything like that in the middle of a forest?!

Paris Street View

On the Zuidas, in the south of Amsterdam, an open air exhibition called Paris Street View opened recently. Michael Wolf took pictures of his monitor on which he used Google Maps street view functionality to look at the streets of Paris. Here are two snaps I took of this exhibition.

Lines and moon

Walking around in the business district near my neighborhood yesterday afternoon I saw this scene: strict architectural lines, a knotty tree crown and the moon. I was walking around the area because of a photo exhibition by Michael Wolf called Paris Street View. More about that in another post.

Track with ice

Yesterday I received the intriguing photo book of Bernard Fuchs called “Roads and Paths“. When I was in my early teens I would often fantasize about where a path or road would lead to. Some of these ancient roads would lead to other continents of over high mountains, up to the top, where they would end. This books show roads and paths, small, hidden or unclear and indecisive.

Today I walked to a nearby park when I saw a car track which was filled with pieces of ice. This brought my mind back to the book, which I bought after only having a look at the front cover and reading the title. After not making photos for some weeks I finally took a couple, one of them you can see below.

Snow and Dogs

Snow in the Netherlands. Just a little, many people would say, but the whole infrastructure is out of order. For many kids it is great fun since their holidays started this weekend.

Translucide

This evening I walked around on the ArtZuid sculpture route near my home in Amsterdam. The sculpture Translucide of Antoine Poncet reflected the light and the color of the sky beautifully. I’ve also added some more photos to the ArtZuid gallery.

ArtZuid, Sculptures and Architecture in Amsterdam

In my neighborhood for the first time a sculpture route will be opened on the 16th of August. It is called ArtZuid, Sculptures & Architecture in Amsterdam (“Zuid” means South). Although it is not yet officially opened many of the sculptures are already in place. It is suddenly much more lively on these avenues. I like it very much. I hope they will do it every year. There is a gallery with more pictures on the ArtZuid page.

Low flying

This is another form of panorama photography I am experimenting with. I sat on a bench in the Amsterdam Forest which is close to Schiphol Airport. I took a couple of panoramas while the planes were flying over and combined the results. I failed a bit in the execution. As you can see the sky is overexposed. But it was fun to do.

Pond in the park

A beautiful part of the Beatrixpark in Amsterdam is the renovate pond. This morning I walked around it and sat on a bench. Many ducks were looking for food in the water. The flowers attracted bees, butterflies and wasps.

Bosbaan Rowing Track, Amsterdam

Today I had lunch on a terrace near the Bosbaan rowing track in Amsterdam. This weekend there is a large international rowing regatta. I made this handheld panorama. It is taken from the side of the finish.

Poppies alternative

As an alternative to the photo in the previous post you can see that the moment of exposure much decides the result of the photo. I like the contrast between the fragile flower and the powerful truck. This photo is just nice wallpaper to me.

Today when I cycled along the A10 highway South of Amsterdam. I saw a nice patch of poppy flowers (I think the Latin name is Papaver rhoeas). I like the delicate leafs of the flowers. Just behind this patch big trucks pass by. I liked the contrast.

Today I went cycling south of Amsterdam and on my way back I cycled along the Amstel river. When I sat on a bench I was fascinated by the rhythm of the road structure and tried to capture it.

Queensday or Koninginnedag in Amsterdam

Once a year people in the Netherlands clear their attics and sell their old stuff to other people (which sell the same stuff the next year to someone else). People dress up in orange cloths because we celebrate the birthday of the former queen of Orange, the late mother of the current queen. This afternoon I sat outside a bookstore on the Spui square in Amsterdam. It was quit cold but the sun kept me warm. Many people of many kinds walked by. I really enjoyed just watching.

“Amsterdam dankt zijn Canadezen”

“Amsterdam thanks its Canadians” is a monument in Amsterdam on the Apollolaan. It stands along the route the Canadians took when the liberated Amsterdam in the spring of 1945 at the end of the second world war. As a boy I often passed it on my way to school. I did not like it because of the material used. I like it better now, but the rusty steel does not relate to a liberated feeling for me.
